Tour Program

Day 1 to day 4: Surma or Suri

Upon your arrival, you will leave for Jimma, the region where coffee originates, and begin your journey among the Surmas.

The Surma, also called Suri, are known for Donga. Marking the passage to adulthood for the young men, this brutal duel highlights their strength, courage and endurance. Armed with heavy wooden sticks, opponents face off in fierce battles that can result in serious injury or even death.

Beyond a simple physical test, the Donga has an important spiritual dimension. It allows young men to demonstrate their value to the community and attract the attention of women.

However, this ancestral practice is today threatened with disappearance. Banned by the Ethiopian government in 1994 due to its violence, it nevertheless continues to be practiced in certain communities.

It is also a favorite of professional and amateur photographers for the way women and children enhance their appearance with elaborate body paintings and by using the surrounding nature to compose and adorn themselves with wild flowers and herbs. .
