Journey Overview

Discover the magic of Immersion with the Bodi for Ka'el     with our carefully crafted itinerary designed to provide an unforgettable experience.

The Bodi Ethnic Group are a fascinating people from the Omo Valley of Ethiopia. The Bodi, also known as Me'en, live near the Omo River in southern Ethiopia. These pastoralist and agricultural people grow sorghum, corn and coffee along the banks of the river, while also raising livestock, which plays an important role in their way of life.

Among the surprising traditions of the ethnic groups of Ethiopia, that of the Bodi is particularly unusual. Men are generally overweight, which is considered a sign of beauty among the Bodi.

Thus, once a year, in June, the Bodi celebrate their new year with the Ka'el ceremony, during which the fattest and corpulent man is elected. To gain weight, they consume large quantities of honey and milk. They move around naked or simply covered with a blanket.

The winner of this competition obtains great fame within the tribe at the cost of sacrifices and mistreatment of their bodies. This circuit is centered on the Bodi ethnic group of the Omo valley and to allow you to witness this unique event. Great flexibility is nevertheless necessary because the final dates of Ka'el are often known a few weeks before the start of the festivities.

Depending on how the days go, you can also discover the Mursi, living not far away and known in particular for these women on plateaus.

Immerse yourself in the cultural richness of the Bodi and Ka'el people of Ethiopia - a unique experience that will transport you to a fascinating world of ancient traditions and unique customs. Let yourself be seduced by the beauty and authenticity of these people and embark on an unforgettable journey to the heart of the Omo Valley. A combination with other ethnic groups of the Omo valley or with the Suri is possible on request.
